New publication characterising the gamma-ray emission from the Galactic Centre region

November 2, 2026

The Galactic Centre is a rich environment that hosts a multitude of fascinating objects, many of which can be studied through gamma rays. A new study now published in Astronomy & Astrophysics provides the most accurate characterisation of the gamma-ray emission from this region so far, shedding new light onto how cosmic rays are produced and propagate in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ). The analysis of the H.E.S.S. data also allowed us to derive new constraints on the distribution of gas clouds in the CMZ, an essential ingredient to better understand this highly interesting region.

This study was also highlighted in our Source of the Month Series recently, as SOM 2026/09!
